Why would I need an abdominal ultrasound?

Abdominal ultrasound scan encompasses the anatomy of the liver, gallbladder, biliary tree, pancreas, spleen, kidney and blood vessels of the abdomen. The biliary tree is a system of vessels that guides secretions from the liver, pancreas, and gallbladder through a series of ducts into the duodenum. An ultrasound exam is ideal for the assessment of abdominal sounds.

Early Detection of Intestinal Issues

Abdominal ultrasounds may be used to detect many digestive/intestinal problems.

Ultrasounds examining the abdominal area can detect:
  • Cysts or abnormal growths in the liver, spleen, or pancreas
  • Abnormal enlargement of the spleen
  • Cancer of the liver or fatty liver

Typical Candidates

An abdominal ultrasound can help evaluation the root of bloating abdominal pain. A one-time abdominal aortic ultrasound screening is recommended for male and female each year.
